Need Inspiration - What to do with this fireplace?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonxlr8/618 ...

We have recently discovered and blocked this beautiful fireplace, which was hidden behind the plaster wall of our house number 1897.

We have fitted a wood stove, but can not decide what to do about the decorations of the brick and stone. Should I clean everything and seal against dust, plaster to prevent the brick surround, plaster or gypsum to the opening up the whole thing?

Also, any thoughts on what kind of stove set into it? Bricks with a slate on and granite?

Any ideas would be appreciated, take photos of what it could look like would be left, what would you do?

  • arlettde I'm sure you've thought about ... and I only mention it because it has not specifically said anything about it ... But the chimney and all the functional stuff must be checked and corrected and updated.

As for the aesthetics ... I suggest taking pictures and looking "Feeding Your Brain Art" as much as possible with pictures of fireplaces, refine the search, as the things that you can find the fallen. There are probably books out there on the open fireplace design, but it sounds like you are involved in a professional and have everything you really need is to worry about, as so Internet searches search pictures should give you a lot of stuff.

Also to note is the style of the house, you want to remain faithful to the original style? If so, would the slate and tile and probably best choice with the original style you have a limited range of options to deal with work work work. Add Granite is a modern update and change the style and flavor to the chimney, regardless of the pattern or color of the granite. Not to say it's bad, it's not just traditional 1897th

Actually, I like how your idea for brick/slate sounds, but still would feed my art brain for some ideas. Even in this limited area there are a variety of ways.

If it were me, I would spend time drawing and painting with ideas and likely end up with some eclectic combination of traditional taste with a few details, the unique and arty, probably some mosaic and a vintage flavor were ... but my taste is pretty eclectic, arty and wild.

Do not let your contractor is rush you, all the more important it is done right, as it happened now. Start looking for ideas on hold and for what you want. I work in rebuilding for years and have many instances crashed jobs that end up as "I wish I wouldn've ..." s. Do not do that.

Remember that a fire are forever (sortof) and for all elements of your facility is not the place to decorate to make risky decisions.
If you watch a lot of pictures, then choose something that inspires you every time you look at it, you'll be just fine!

Oohhh ... I've just noticed the picture.
Ok, I would not plaster all over, I may find the whole wall, and the slight asymmetry is attractive to me. Love the pine paneling. If you think you have to render, I do it only to the stones that surround the opening. A tile or slate hearth would keep traditional.

I can not see the rest of the room ... I have full wall, even a small wall of bricks is a severe and dominating element. Can the rest of the space to deal with it?

If that's my home, I probably would surround a tile mosaic over the whole thing, great Gothic angel than a focus on the fp of beautiful tiles and versatile glass, metal, found objects. But that's all perfectly to my home.Luck! Answering questions in Decorating & Remodeling Craft ideas for a mini oval tub? Is it cheaper to change to the plan or the building? Where shall I my new convection toaster in the kitchen? Where can I find dried lavender and rose petals to make potpourri?
